“But Why!?”
I figured for my first lil blog post on this new site I’d answer my most common question, “Why”.
If you know me, you know I like making weird things. I have always had a weirdness about the dentist and a disdain for my teeth, having anxiety dreams about my teeth very regularly. So one day I woke up and decided to put that weirdness into a 3D form. I had been painting my feelings about the human body and pushing the limits of what a human body can look like, while still looking like a body for quite some time, so it only felt right to break out a new medium and make something functional. As much as I love beautiful pottery that just sits on a shelf, waiting to be knocked over, I’ve always admired the artists that have been able to take everyday things and make art out of them. I think the mundane everyday things should be artwork too, even if it is a gross little mouth. I really just wanted to make something different than the usual “pretty” things and get my fear of teeth out of the way at the same time.
I started by collecting loved one’s teeth and old dentistry molds (from an unknown source I swear!) to practice making teeth for my sculptures and weird stuff out of clay. I quickly realized the clay was not creating the desired effect and experimented with many different mediums and methods until I came across Polymorph plastic. I then went down a rabbit hole… now that I’ve made so many mouths and functional weird lil guys, each one I am driven to make a little grosser, or a little more accurate in texture or form. I’ve always been fascinated by textures, whether it’s in my food, on my clothes, or in a painting. So it only feels right to make functional little globs of my brain that people can pick up, examine, and feel the texture.
So if you’re ever looking at something, thinking: “oh god why”. I challenge you to think: “Why the fuck not” instead.
Let me know what you think in the comments! Did you even read this? Do you want to read more like this? What would you reallllly wanna know about my art? Roast me.
